This week Charnwood Forest Geoparks launches a new campaign to conserve the amazing geology we have here in our region. With the support of Bradgate Park, Charnwood Borough Council, and Leicestershire County Council, we’re reminding visitors that our rocks are of international importance and are protected by law.
Over the next few weeks you will be seeing geoconservation signage at the entrances to Beacon Hill, Bradgate Park, and The Outwoods. To launch the campaign, representatives met at Beacon Hill Country Park. Cllr Deborah Taylor, Deputy Leader of Leicestershire County Council said: “The crag-topped hills of Charnwood Forest, like those a Beacon Hill, are a defining feature of our landscape. We all have a responsibility to care for our region’s geological heritage”. Cllr Jenny Bokor, Lead Member for Open Spaces at Charnwood Borough Council commented: “We’re excited to be working with the Geopark to share the amazing geological stories at sites like The Outwoods. Our local geoheritage is of global significance, and we all have a role to play in conserving it.” James Dymond, Director at Bradgate Park Trust, said: “”Rocks may be hard, but they still need conserving. A Bradgate Park we have a number of internationally important geological sites – it’s our duty to ensure they are preserved for future generations”.
