Meet Geopark volunteer Cathy

Cathy reflects on her first volunteering experience with the Geopark:

I volunteered for the first time last weekend, helping to clear overgrown vegetation around rock faces and improve the visitor information boards at a disused quarry which is now a nature reserve. Beforehand I was nervous, not knowing what to expect – would it be too physical for me? Would anyone talk to me? I needn’t have worried, everyone was really friendly and I was made to feel very welcome from the start.

The event was well-organised with a choice of activities to help with so we could choose which appealed the most. I thoroughly enjoyed the morning and had the added warm glow that comes from doing something positive and worthwhile. The lead (Jack) also gave us an interesting talk about the geology, wildlife and history of the quarry.

I certainly won’t hesitate to volunteer again.
