Schools Supported With Local History Teaching

During November, our Heritage Education Officer Susan Kilby was busy visiting local schools to deliver workshops spanning around a thousand years of the region’s history. At Nanpantan Nurture Centre, students were guided through the Anglo-Saxon and Viking place-names of Charnwood Forest to see how those early medieval residents visualised the places they made their homes. Using our giant floor map, they discovered what these early settlers found notable about Charnwood Forest.

At Rothley Primary School, Year 6 students were guided on a mini-field-trip to the war memorial in the centre of the village where, using primary historical sources, they uncovered the stories of four Rothley men who died during active service in World War II. Having spent the earlier part of the term learning about this important conflict, the students were able to see the impact that the war had on the local community.
